Isabel Santos ’23 – CIEE Seville, Spain

My name is Isabel Santos, I’m from Warrenville, IL, and I can’t wait to take you along on my adventure. I’m currently a junior studying Psychology and Spanish at Hope and will be in Spain this spring to immerse myself in a new culture, practice my Spanish-speaking skills, and take advantage of the opportunity to study in a new country.

I am excited to practice Spanish, gain a greater understanding of the world, and become more self-aware in the process. My career goal is to become a clinical psychologist and fluency in Spanish will expand the population of individuals I can work with. Currently, there is a lack of training in regards to mental health services in Spanish, resulting in ill-prepared bilingual therapists.

While general psychology programs are plentiful, there is a notably inadequate amount of programs with an emphasis on culture and language, and fluency alone may not qualify an individual to provide therapy in that language. I believe that engaging in the hands-on and once-in-a-lifetime experience in Spain is a necessary first step in making me a more qualified future psychologist.

I look forward to learning about the rich culture of Spain and I’m so grateful to be able to share what I learn with you!
