Time really does fly. I’m somehow ¼ of the way into my semester here, and it still feels like I just got here last week. I was so worried that I wouldn’t be built for city life, but I absolutely love being here and have even begun to look into graduate school options within the city (the Chicago School of Professional Psychology? – they have a really good forensic psychology program). At this point I think I’ve come to the realization that law is not the field that I want to go into, but I am still really enjoying my internship. This week I got to sit in on a trial, and it was a really interesting experience. Additionally, I’ve been working on some long term projects for my site that have made me feel included and worthy, and I’m excited to see what the end product will be.
With the Lunar New Year being this week (February 1st), some of us ventured down to Chinatown for a few hours. I tried a Lotus Blossom Mooncake from one of the bakeries there, and it was amazing. I love how Chicago offers such a wide variety of culture within such a small area, and there are endless possibilities to immerse yourself in experiences that are different from what you are used to. Another food update I have for you all is about Cheesie’s, a small sandwich shop in Wicker Park. They are known for all of their crazy grilled cheese combinations, and this was something I knew that I had to try given that grilled cheese sandwiches are one of my favorite foods. I’m pretty sure that I entered a cheese coma after eating it, but it was still pretty good and something I recommend that everyone who loves grilled cheese tries.
I attended one of my first student life events this week as well, which was ice skating at Millennium Park. It was absolutely freezing, but it was really fun to see everyone outside of classes having a good time. I also learned that I am actually pretty good at ice skating, which was both a pleasant and funny surprise. My family also surprised me by coming to visit me this weekend, and it was nice to see them even though it was only for a few hours. Being away from my family has definitely been one of the hardest aspects for me, so I have valued all of the time that I have been able to spend with them since being here. That’s about all that happened this week, stay tuned for what next is to come!
