Chester

This week my program traveled to Chester by train! The city has expanded outside the ancient wall, but surrounding the center of the city is an ancient Roman wall. It was designed to protect the city from outsiders, keep all the animals in, and served as a training ground of the soldiers. We walked on top of the wall as it is a great way to view the city. I could not believe I was even allowed to touch something so old let alone be able to walk on top of the wall.

Even though Chester is known for it Roman roots, it is also known for its multi-level shopping. I am not sure how to explain the split level. Essentially, think about having to go downstairs to one shop and upstairs to the shop above. This feature can be found throughout the four main streets and is a unique feature of the city. The architectural structure dates back to the 13th century.

One of the main points in the city is the Cathedral. I was blown away by the size of the Chester Cathedral. It is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been to and it is hard to believe that the Cathedral was built so many years ago. The vast open spaces made me feel like I was in a whole other world. One of the more corky features of the church was a cement sculpture of the last supper. What was different about it was the way it was covered in computer keys. I found Amen and The Last Supper spelled out.

The Cathedral was breathtaking! However, the most adorable part of Chester was the school children. There are actors dressed up as ancient Roman soldiers. They take families around the city telling them the history and what Chester was like back in the Roman times BUT, they also tour students around the city. Oh my gosh, I don’t think it can get cuter than primary school children dressed in their uniforms parading down the street with vests and yellow shields chanting with the Roman solider. I wish I had gotten a better picture to show you all. Hands down it was a great city to visit!
