Living in any big city can be overwhelming. There are so many things to see and do! I fell into a routine in Barcelona once I got my bearings. I found my gym, my grocery store, my school, and everything I needed. However, Barcelona offers a variety of monuments, parks, and churches to see as well.
Recently, my mom came to visit me in Barcelona – it was AWESOME. I loved having her here because it was a mix of showing her around but also experiencing new things. I am familiar and somewhat comfortable with Barcelona and the neighborhoods within the city. Showing my mom around my neighborhood was the best because I felt like a local!
On the other hand, I got to experience new things with my mom that weekend as well. For the first time, we both got to visit La Sagrada Familia, one of the most famous churches in Barcelona and in the world. I felt like a tourist! I was doing and seeing things I have never done or seen before!
La Sagrada Familia was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Massive stain glass windows consumed the structure. I found it interesting to hear that La Sagrada Familia is still under construction! It was supposed to be finished in 2025 but with the COVID-19 pandemic putting a halt to everything, it it projected to be finished in 2026. The architect, Antoni Gaudi designed the building to be completed at 170 meters tall. He remarked that no man-made building should exceed the work of God. La Sagrada Familia will be just one meter shorter than the tallest point in Barcelona – Montjuïc.
Having my mom visit me in Barcelona at the half-way mark of the semester was perfect. I felt comfortable enough to show her around but also experience things for the first time with her. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the semester holds for me!
