Be Stress Free for Finals!

As the semester draws to a close and you find yourself overwhelmed with papers and upcoming tests, remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In her blog article on Harvard Business Review’s Blog Network “Nine Ways Successful People Defeat Stress”, Heidi Grant Halvorson outlines these tips for a path to a stress-free life:

1. Have self-compassion. Basically, cut yourself some slack!

2. Remember the “Big Picture.” Don’t think of your paper as hours and hours of mind-numbing research. Think of it as a path to your future successful career.

3. Rely on routines.
Routines are less stressful, because you’re doing things by rote and not making all those hard decisions.

4. Take five (or ten) minutes to do something you find interesting. Give yourself time to do interesting things that will help you refuel your energy.

5. Add where and when to your to-do list. Use if-then statements to get the work done: If it is 7pm, then I will be at the library writing my paper.

6. Use if-thens for positive self-talk. Keep your emotions in check by saying things like, “If my paper is due in three hours, then I will remain calm and relaxed.”

7. See your work in terms of progress, not perfection. Think about your accomplishments in terms of what you’ve already learned, not how much more you have to go to achieve perfection. Accept that you will make mistakes.

8. Think about the progress that you’ve already made. As in the point above, reflect on what you’ve already accomplished. Appreciate your small wins. Did you gather all the sources for your paper? Good job! Have you made an outline? Way to go!

9. Know whether optimism or defensive pessimism works for you. What’s your motivational style? Do you thrive on opportunities for achievement (promotion) or working to maintain what you already have (prevention)? Knowing how you get motivated will help you in achieving your goals.

As always, the library can help you! Whether it is a student worker or a librarian, ask us for help and we’ll get you the research you need to complete your papers.

Students, staff, and faculty can all help their community by donating food and other simple items to CAH’s pantry, which is currently understocked. Some of the common items that people are encouraged to donate range from canned fruit, oatmeal, and ramen noodles to shampoo, toothpaste, and napkins. Even furniture or appliances are greatly appreciated! A complete list of the highest priority items that are required can be found at http://www.communityactionhouse.org/most-needed-items/. Polar Bear Oral History Interviews

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said:

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.

The same year, The American Expeditionary Force, North Russia, 1918-1919 (“Polar Bears”), a contingent of 5000 US troops, landed as part of the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War and fought the Red Army.  Available from the Hope College Libraries Joint Archives in Digital Commons, you may listen to oral history interviews and read transcripts of an oral history project done with local “Polar Bear” veterans. The physical collection includes interview transcripts, cassette tapes, articles, bibliographies, diaries, clippings, photographs, microfilm and a book.

Ask a Librarian at Van Wylen

jessica_studentIt is almost like having your own personal librarian, living right inside your computer! Hope College’s library website offers many fact-finding resources, but did you know that there is a Live Chat option, which allows you to contact someone who is ready to help you with any research questions you may have? Using the “Ask A Librarian” service, you can also choose to email research questions using the email form, or even text your inquiry to 616-765-4673.  If your research needs are more advanced, or if you would simply prefer to work with a librarian in person for an extended amount of time, your best bet is to schedule a Research Consultation.  As Todd Wiebe, Head of Research and Instruction explains, “Of all the options available for getting research help in the library, the scheduled consultation is the ultimate.  We welcome students at any stage of the research process, too.  Consultations scheduled early will often develop into an ongoing dialogue between student and librarian as the research progresses.”  Students are welcome to employ these services at any time, or stop by in person during the hours of the Research Desk.

Greenwood Guides to Science and Religion

Van Wylen Library offers a wide collection of resources that highlight many different subjects. Recently, new resources in religious studies have become available. The Greenwood Guides to Science and Religion, available from Credo Reference, give multiple options to find information on these subjects. These volumes can be accessed by any student, faculty, or staff with a Hope username and password. The essays in the Greenwood Guides address extensive information that question intelligent design, discuss the relationship of the roots of religion and its current path  compare different religions, and integrate opinions and studies of professors specializing in science and religion. With critical thinking, they combine an analysis of many difficult questions, such as the concept of the mind without the soul, with the history of Liberal Protestantism, Islam, Evangelism, Catholicism and Judaism. These books provide many resources that will be helpful when seeking a historical analysis of religion.

For more information on research in religious studies, be sure to start with the Religion Research Guide. Search the library catalog for religion subject books available in print and electronically.
