Another week down, and one week closer to warmer weather (hopefully). I think that the overall trend of this week was exploring new places, as I was able to visit the community of Pilsen, attend a play at Goodman Theatre, and finally walk on the Chicago Riverwalk. For my Social Justice class this week we were split into pairs and sent off to find specific landmarks or art within the city, and so my friend Sydney and I traveled to Pilsen to find the Weaving Cultures Mural. Pilsen is a mainly hispanic community, and so we also stopped into a small churro shop on our way home, which was a 10/10 experience. It was also very interesting to come back together as a class and discuss all of these different cultural landmarks of the city, as some are things that I have looked at many times but always bypass without a second thought. I don’t think I realized until this week how much history I am surrounded by, and so it was definitely a very surreal moment for me.
For my arts class we attended a play at Goodman Theatre this week, entitled “The Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci”. I absolutely love taking a class where I am exposed to different forms of art every week, even though this play was not my favorite. It is the perfect example of something that is able to get me out of my comfort zone, even if it is in a very minimal way.
Finally, for once it was actually not freezing here (as in the temperature was above 40 degrees) and so I decided to go walk by the river. I ended up walking for about two hours, and it was definitely the best decision I’ve made in awhile. The experience allowed me to recenter myself with my emotions as well as destress from my week, and is something that I hope to make a part of my weekly routine given that it is warm enough to do so.
