“Knowledge is realizing that the street is one way; wisdom is looking in both directions anyway.”

One thing I’ve always struggled with since a child is a pesky eye condition, which is actually a great metaphor in conjunction with this quote. I had often struggled to look both ways because my left eye hurt like the Dickens, but also because I had always liked to think that my street was the right one. I want to shout out the class of 2020 for always helping me turn my head and opening me up to the beauty of community and trust. Wednesdays were always the day in the middle of the week when I needed a break from the grind, and I took this day to more intentionally spend time with my people. So on this Wednesday, I salute the memory of all of you and look forward to the Wednesday when we can finally reunite.

It is here at Hope that I have learned to find joy and meaning in every trial and tribulation that comes across my path. We serve a God that tells us there will be many hardships in our lives, but that with him, we will overcome them all. For there is a purpose to discover in each tribulation. I am thankful for this lesson and those here at Hope who have been by my side through this journey.

After 4 years at Hope, it’s easy for me to say that my favorite memory was my experience with Nykerk song. I spent countless joyful hours in VanderWerf, first as a song girl, and then as a directing coach. Nykerk challenged me to be more driven, passionate, and resourceful. The love and support I received from my co-coaches and participants is something that can’t be matched. Being surrounded by so many strong women was empowering, and I am so thankful for the time that I spent with my even year family.

When I look back at my four years at Hope, Dance Marathon is the first thing that comes to mind. Being involved in this cause, and especially Dream Team this past year, was by far a highlight for me. Having the opportunity to work with the miracle families and hearing their stories was so incredibly fulfilling and one of the best experiences of my life. It was an honor to fight for this cause and to bring joy to the miracle kids alongside some of my best friends. I would never trade the 24-hour dance parties for anything!

Some of my favorite memories of Hope College have come from being a member of the Theatre Department. Through Hope Theatre I have traveled to the Kennedy Center’s National College Theatre Festival in Washington D.C., interned at Hope Summer Repertory Theatre, and devised two new plays with students and faculty. This department gave me confidence when I had none, professors who strived to help me grow into the best version of myself, and friendships that will last a lifetime. I am so incredibly grateful for these past four years.

I initially thought picking one memory from the last 4 years would be a real challenge, but being involved in Dance Marathon and especially Dream Team this past year made it a no-brainer for me. Working alongside the miracle families and especially Hayden was easily one of the most fulfilling and impactful experiences of my life. It’s my hope that Dance Marathon will continue to provide opportunities for current and future miracle families with a second chance at life. We are truly lucky to have such an amazing marathon at Hope as well as a supportive community and alumni network that I’m proud to soon be a part of.
