Interested in becoming a member of HASP?

It is a GREAT time to invite a friend to join HASP. Membership dues are now only $50 for the remainder of the 21-22 academic year (January – June 2022). We have an exciting Winter/Spring semester course line up, so don’t delay!
We’ve made it simple for potential members to get started. Click on the “Interested in becoming a member” blue box on the right hand side of our home page or visit hope.edu/hasp-new-member to begin the membership process. If a potential member is unable to access the online form they can

Next Monthly Program Meeting – open to guests!

The next HASP Monthly Program meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, at the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. , with the program from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Our speaker is President Matthew Scogin, Hope College President. Masks and social distancing required. Please refer to our monthly newsletter for additional details and shuttle/parking recommendations.

Winter/Spring courses begin Jan. 19th!

Courses begin Wednesday, January 19th and registration remains open. You may register for the first half of the semester right now which includes any courses prior to March 15th, 2022. We will have a second registration, opening on Wednesday, March 2nd, for the last half of the semester (all courses beginning AFTER March 15th). Bill and I were introduced to HASP through two HASP members whom we met when we were taking a walk in the Central Park area and stopped to sit at the fire dock to enjoy Lake Macatawa. My husband and I were new to the area and met a HASP couple on the fire dock. Both were Hope graduates and enthusiastic members and supporters of HASP. Within the next few days, a copy of the HASP spring curriculum appeared in our mailbox. When we saw all the opportunities to learn new and different things, we were convinced HASP membership was what we wanted in our retirement lives….to add to life-long learning! Many of the classes are presented by our talented membership and Hope College faculty. You can pick and choose to fit your schedule… Classes have become even further accessible, now being offered in the comfort of your home or your home away from home in the winter months via Zoom or you can still learn in person in our beautiful new classrooms. Many of us have become computer geeks! Life-long learning continues…

I especially enjoy and learn from my in-class experiences with the Hope College students. HASP members are invited by Hope professors to join in various classes to interact with the students by sharing their various life experiences. Members really like this experience, and we are never at a loss for volunteers for these classes. HASP has a liaison within our Service Committee who is in contact with Professors at Hope each semester. Several HASP members and I had a great experience working with the senior nursing students in Hope’s BSN program in enacting and writing the script for healthcare simulation scenarios.

I have been a member of HASP for twelve years and during that time have had the opportunity to meet interesting, inspiring, versatile, and dedicated people. I have had the opportunity to continue my leadership experience by serving as President for two years at which time HASP officially formed its official alliance with Hope College engaging with the department of Alumni Engagement. I was fortunate to be a member of the Finance Committee involved with the funding of our new space (come and see it!!). I currently serve on the Service Committee, Chair the Library Committee (The HASP library was made possible by book donations from our membership.), and I serve as office help at the reception desk of our HASP office.

Aside from our ongoing educational curriculum, we have “educational” fun which is made possible by our Special Events Committee who plan various off-site experiences from one to three-day trips. Some memorable special events trips with HASP friends that I will never forget were our three-day trip down the Mississippi River on a riverboat (which my husband organized), crossing to Mackinac Island for the closing of the Grand Hotel in October and, to Louisville, Kentucky to experience the site of the Kentucky Derby where our Special Events Committee arranged an” educational hour” on betting sheets and tips for betting on the right horse!

I am grateful to be associated with HASP and its commitment to life-long learning and to serving its members. The administrative staff has helped us work within boundaries due to Covid and we have survived by adapting to new ways of doing things to continue to move HASP forward. Each year brings new members with new ideas and talents. HASP is not stagnant, but adaptable to the needs of its members and our changing world.

… When I moved to Michigan from Chicago, I did not know anyone except my son and his family. They are the reason that I moved here back in 2012, and I have joyfully watched his children grow and have been so thankful for the opportunity to do so. However, you know that kids’ priority is not hanging out with their grandmother, and so when someone told me about HASP, I jumped at the chance to meet people around my age. IT IS ABSOLUTELY MY BEST DECISION EVER.

If you have a copy of the latest course proposals for January through March and beyond, you will see the incredible variety of offerings for all members. I sign up for some via zoom (especially morning classes) because I have a dog, Romper, who like me is a slow mover in the AM. Then I sign up for other classes which are in person, as all of them were prior to Covid. It is the best way in the world to meet people who are lifelong learners, who have incredibly interesting backgrounds, and who share a commitment to discussing issues on an intellectual level. I am sure that within the HASP community, all political viewpoints are represented, but people are more than respectful.

In the beginning I started going to the Non-fiction books group, and after about three years, I was asked to take over its leadership. So, my big volunteer job is running this program every semester. It is great. I send out a list of book choices for the next semester, and folks vote on the four they would like to read and discuss. Then I twist arms to find members willing to lead the discussions, because we all take turns. At the present time, I am also on the Board of Directors and participate in some of the Board’s subcommittees.

I can fill you in on some background on classes; for example, any course taught by Fred Johnson fills up immediately. He is extremely popular.

My best advice is to realize that given the altered reality involving Covid, it will be difficult to see and enjoy HASP at its best. But it is still a GREAT value. We shall hope that little by little HASP will return to its more sociable former self.

FALL course and program info!

Dear HASP Members,

We hope that you are all faring well during this current situation. We also hope you have truly taken some time to rest, read, relax and enjoy a slower pace and have taken care of yourselves and stayed healthy!

We want to highlight a few suggestions for engaging with HASP courses and monthly programs in our online format as we approach the fall semester. We will be holding HASP courses at our normally scheduled time (Mondays–Thursdays, 9:30–11:00 a.m. and 1:00–2:30 p.m. and Fridays, 9:30–11:00 am only). HASP courses will be recorded ONLY when we have the permission of the presenter and will not be available until January 2021 on our YouTube channel. This is different from the summer. So if you want to participate in a class, it will be important to register and show up online at the scheduled time or you will miss it!

Many of our presenters will teach their class from their own personal home or office, but several will be teaching from the HASP classroom in order to receive tech support. We are not allowed to have any additional people in the office or classroom at this time – this is for presenters only. You will continue to sign into the HASP Virtual Classroom to participate at www.hope.edu/virtualhasp. You can use this same link for all of our courses and monthly programs, so be sure to copy the link or bookmark it on your personal device for easy access.

Late in the fall the HASP Board of Directors, in conjunction with Hope College Health and Safety Committees will revisit our online decision to determine if we MIGHT have some courses in person AFTER Thanksgiving when students have left campus. Because your safety is of utmost importance we will not make this decision lightly and/or without all the proper approvals and safety procedures in place.

During our summer classes we have learned a few things about Zoom and the best practices for learning (i.e., muting your mic unless you want to speak, using the CHAT option to make comments and ask questions, adjusting sound and volume balance on presenters, etc.). As a reminder, we ask that you sign-on in appropriate attire, ready to engage and listen to our presenters, and if you have to do other things while listening in – PLEASE turn off your camera so your activities are not a distraction to other learners and our presenters. We also strongly encourage you to consider selecting “Speaker View” while attending class. This allows your screen to primarily display just the speaker and any PowerPoint slides they are sharing and helps you feel more engaged with the presenter.

A few additional technical notes before we start fall courses:

1.) HASP will continue to use Zoom. Zoom works best if you download and install the client from their website onto your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Then, when you click on a Zoom link in any web browser, the client will open automatically and get you connected to the call. If you can’t (or don’t want to) install Zoom on your computer, then the website version is an okay substitute. When you click a link to join a meeting, there’s small text at the bottom that says “join via web browser”. If you’re going that route, we’d recommend a modern, up-to-date browser such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple’s Safari, or Microsoft Edge (Apple friends out there: Download Zoom onto your laptops and use Chrome as your search engine instead of Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer). There is a link on our website page under “Virtual HASP” to download Zoom, at (www.hope.edu/hasp).
Also, if you prefer to use your smartphone, you can go to your app store and download the Zoom app to your phone. If you need assistance installing, call the HASP office and one of us will walk you through the process (395.7919).

2.) When you sign-on, you will need “permission” from the host (HASP staff) to join the Zoom classroom. Please be patient as you wait until staff admits you shortly before the class start. Fall courses WILL require registration and payment, so they will not be open to the general public, and we will be admitting people based on registration lists.

3.) Please think about, and find, the best place to take your online class in your home/location. Rooms with good lighting (perhaps outside if you are somewhere warm) and little or no distractions would be appreciated.

4.) You will automatically be muted when you sign-on. Please leave yourself muted unless asking a question or making a comment. After you ask your question, please be sure to mute yourself again as keeping your microphone on will create feedback for everyone on the video.

5.) Different presenters handle questions differently! We will ask their preference at the beginning of class so everyone is informed if the presenter is willing to take questions as we go, only at the end, or at scheduled breaks in their presentation. Please try to keep your questions and comments related to the subject matter AND USE THE CHAT option to type them in.

ZOOM Help Sessions: We will offer two times you can enter the HASP virtual classroom (www.hope.edu/virtualhasp) to get help with questions, adjust your settings, learn how to use the chat option, etc.…before fall classes start:

Shaw Festival Trip, October 2020

Travel to beautiful Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada to enjoy seeing three plays: “Gypsy” a musical with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “The Devil’s Disciple” by Bernard Shaw, and “Sherlock Holmes and the Raven’s Curse” by Hamilton Wright based on the works of Arthur Conan Doyle. We will be staying at the Colonel Butler Inn in downtown Niagara on the Lake within walking distance of restaurants and theaters. Travel begins on Wednesday, October 7, a box lunch on the way and arrival in Niagara on the Lake in late afternoon, dinner on your own and an evening play performance. The next morning is free to enjoy the restaurants and shopping on your own, a play at 2:00 pm and dinner on your own. The third play is at 8:00 pm in the evening. Breakfast is included at the hotel each morning either in the breakfast room or on the veranda. Friday morning we will return to Holland and arrive there around dinner time. We will stop for lunch on your own on the return trip.

Please mark Thursday evening, May 21 on your calendar to mix and mingle with your HASP friends at our annual Spring Fling. Once again, this event will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Avenue, Holland.

The primary purpose of Spring Fling has been to enjoy a relaxing time of fellowship, and to get to know HASP members that you’ve not met. If you have never attended, we hope that you will join us this year. The atmosphere is very casual, while the conversation is NON-STOP lively!

We ask that you bring either an appetizer or dessert to share (homemade or store bought). HASP will provide an array of beverages, including wine, punch, and coffee.

NEW HASP Facilities Update

We hope you have had a chance to visit the new HASP office and classroom on the main floor of Anderson Werkman, Suite 120!
We extend deep appreciation for the generosity of all the HASP members who have contributed to our HASP Facilities Fund this year. To date we have received approximately $220,000 toward our $450,000 goal to fully replenish this fund. Gifts range from $10 to $50,000 and every dollar is an investment in the future of our
The HASP Facilities Fund benefits us all by reducing our annual operating costs as well as enabling us to address future facility needs. Investment earnings are shared with the college in exchange for a rent-free facility on campus and numerous in-kind services (i.e., physical plant, copy and mailing center, computer and information technology support, etc.). This allows HASP membership and course fees to remain steady and affordable.
Fundraising is still active for this effort. If you would like to make a gift, we would love to know by May 1st, 2020, in order to properly recognize all donors at our annual meeting. Past and current facilities fund gifts of all sizes will receive recognition via HASP publications. In addition, there are two special recognition opportunities:
Donor Wall – Donors making leadership gifts of $5,000 (over up to five years) will receive recognition on a donor wall in the new HASP suite. Previous giving to the HASP facility fund can be counted toward hitting this
Room Naming Opportunities – A variety of naming opportunities exist for spaces within the new facility. Friends or families may join together to meet a naming threshold. To date, we have received naming gifts for the
library, director’s office, and conference room. We are looking for partners for the classrooms, welcome and hospitality space, and work area.
All members are invited to make a gift or pledge via the HASP Facilities Fund gift/pledge cards mailed out in early December and are also available in the HASP office. Gifts can be one-time gifts or payable over five years, and be
made via stock, IRA roll-overs, or deferred gifts through wills and trusts. Checks can be made payable to Hope College with HASP Facilities Fund in the memo section.
