In a world where stories have the power to unite, the Big Read program of 2024 proved to be a vibrant celebration of literature and community, inspiring thousands across our region.

During October and November 2024, our Big Read program has been nothing short of inspiring. With 57 Big Read events, 35 Little Read programs, 19 Middle Read activities, and 34 Mini Read events across three counties, the community came together to celebrate literature in powerful ways.

Two award-winning authors—Pedro Martín (Mexikid) and Yuyi Morales (Dreamers)—visited local schools and libraries, connecting directly with over 2,100 students through seven total events. Pedro’s school visits reached over 600 students, with additional appearances at the Herrick Main Library and in West Ottawa schools. Yuyi reached 1,700 students and community members in Holland and Muskegon, sharing her story with warmth and wisdom.

Pedro Martín’s school visits brought laughter and reflection to classrooms, as he shared his journey as a young Mexican American author. Yuyi Morales, with her captivating storytelling, inspired children and adults alike to embrace their cultural heritage and creativity

October 21 stood out as our busiest day, hosting 11 events in just 24 hours!

Meanwhile, over 23 libraries, 20 community organizations, and five local bookstores participated throughout the season, hosting author talks, graphic novel presentations, and more than 70 programs in Muskegon County alone.

Our Story Project saw tremendous growth, more than doubling from nine to twenty-two published books. More than 500 young authors participated, and the celebration events drew crowds of over 250 people. Our community partners distributed over 600 books, including 350 copies of Mexikid and 50 of Dreamers.

Online engagement was strong as well: our blog drew 11,222 unique visitors with 26 incredible posts, and our social media (Instagram and Facebook) connected with over 2,000 people. Seven podcast episodes added another dimension to our storytelling efforts.

The overwhelming success of last year’s Big Read proves the enduring power of stories to bring people together. Thank you to every reader, partner, volunteer, and participant who made this year’s programming possible!
