1879 October 9: Max von Laue, German physicist is born.

1968 October 11: Apollo 7, with three men aboard, is successfully launched from Cape Kennedy.

2000 October 11: NASA launches its 100th Space Shuttle mission.

1964 October 12: USSR launches Voskhod I, first spacecraft with multi-person crew; it is also the first mission in which the crew does not wear space suits.

1994 October 12: NASA loses contact with the Magellan probe spacecraft in the thick atmosphere of Venus.

1983 October 13: The Space Shuttle Challenger, carrying the largest crew to date with seven people, lands safely at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
