This year Opus Soup will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 7pm in the Fried-Hemenway Auditorium in the Martha Miller Center! For those of you who are unfamiliar with this even, here is what you need to know:
Opus Soup is a bi-annual event serving to release the newly printed copies of Opus and to provide a space for students whose work has been published to share their creativity with others. Student writers are given the chance to publicly read their pieces and student artists can explain their creative process. Students can answer questions about their pieces or ask about other students’s work. The event is free and copies of Opus are free. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy the creativity of Hope’s student body.
Regarding the subject line of this post, a long time ago someone realized that the letters in “Opus” are the same letters in “soup” so this event was named “Opus Soup”. The coming together of many different people, genres of writing and art, and perspectives can be captured in the metaphor of a delicious soup whose broth is filled with many different kinds of vegetables, meat, and/or pasta.
We have a few winners to announce: Daisy Hernandez won the Eerdmans’s Prize for her poem “Dia del Turkey, 2011” and Taylor Ann Krahn won for her prose piece “Cheese on Toast”. If you know these creative women, please feel free to congratulate them! This prize was established more than 60 years ago. It is a huge honor to win. There will be an announcement to publicly recognize them at the Honors Convocation.
The date of our last meeting has been moved from Thursday to TUESDAY MARCH 12 at 6pm in MARTHA MILLER 159. I repeat: this will be the last editorial meeting of the semester. We will be considering and selecting the visual art pieces, which means less reading aloud and more looking at really cool images. It will be lots of fun. Bring friends.
In other news, we have selected 49 of our 150 print submissions. Authors whose work has been chosen will be notified by e-mail very soon.
The Eerdmans Prize winners for best poetry and best prose will be selected this weekend from the pool of submissions that will be included in this semester’s issues of Opus. The winners will be announced at the Honors Convocation and will also receive a monetary reward. Two lucky students will be receiving a congratulatory notice soon as well.
We are in the midst of the editorial process for the Spring 2013 issue of Opus!
Here are the dates, locations, and times for our remaining editorial meetings this semester:
Print Submissions Meetings
Tuesday, March 5, Lubbers 221, 6pm
Thursday, March 7, Lubbers 222, 7pm
Visual Art Submission Meeting and review of Accepted Print Submissions

Hope to see you there as we wind up the selection process!
Stay tuned for Opus Soup, an event to promote the release of the newest edition of Opus in which students can present or read their creative work. It should be happening mid-April.
